# A free alternative to Silhouette Studio

Silhouette Studio Basic is free, and then it is not: SVG import needs Designer Edition, and most of the useful design features sit above that again. The design work can happen elsewhere for nothing, and DXF gets it back into Basic.

## Where Silhouette Studio is stronger

Silhouette Studio sends cuts to the Cameo and owns the machine settings, the registration workflow and the print-then-cut calibration. You will keep it for cutting.

## Feature comparison

| Nesting optimiser | Yes | Business Edition |
| Bulk personalisation | Yes | No |
| Included designs | 7,800+ (free + paid) | Per-design store |

## The DXF route around the paywall

Silhouette Studio Basic will not open an SVG, but it will open a DXF. Every design here exports to DXF, which means the free edition of Silhouette Studio can receive work done in a full vector editor without the Designer Edition purchase.

The trade-off is real and worth stating: DXF carries geometry, not colour. Cut layers survive; fills do not. If you have Designer Edition, export SVG instead and keep both.

## What stays in Silhouette Studio

Cutting, machine settings, registration-mark calibration and print-then-cut alignment. Those are tied to the hardware and stay where they are.

## Questions

### Can Silhouette Studio Basic open SVG?

No, that needs Designer Edition. Export DXF instead and Basic opens it directly.

### Do I lose anything exporting DXF?

Colour and fills. Geometry and layer separation survive, which is what matters for cutting.

### Can you use Silhouette Studio with a Cricut?

Not to cut. Studio drives Silhouette machines only, and Design Space is the only software that can send a cut to a Cricut — neither company opens its pipeline to the other. You can design in Studio and cut on a Cricut, but only by exporting a file Design Space reads, and SVG export is a paid-edition feature in Studio. Designing somewhere that exports SVG for nothing removes that toll.

### Can I design once and cut on both machines?

Yes, and that is the practical reason to keep the design work outside both programs. Export SVG for Design Space and DXF for Studio Basic from the same project, and neither machine needs the other's software.
