# How to weld in Cricut: letters, shapes and script into one clean cut

Updated 2026-11-02 · 4 min read · Technique

Want to know how to weld on Cricut? When you type script text or overlap shapes in Cricut Design Space, each character or shape remains its own closed path. Without welding, the blade cuts through every overlapping join. Welding fuses them into a single continuous outline that weeds and cuts cleanly.

## Step by step

1. **Type the text or arrange shapes.** Add a text object or shapes with genuine overlap between pieces.
2. **Tighten the spacing.** Ensure adjacent pieces visibly overlap. Touching is not enough, they must intersect.
3. **Select everything.** Select all the layers you want to join together.
4. **Click Weld.** Click Weld (or Combine > Weld in Design Space). The overlapping outlines merge into a single closed path.
5. **Check the cut preview.** Inspect the outline. There should be one continuous boundary with no interior cut lines.

## How to weld on Cricut: step-by-step

To weld on Cricut Design Space, place two or more overlapping shapes or letters on your canvas. Select all the layers you want to join, look at the bottom right of the Layers panel, click Combine and select Weld (or click Weld directly on desktop). The overlapping boundary lines disappear and fuse into one layer.

You can also weld directly in CricutCraft Studio before exporting: select any overlapping script letters, monograms, or shapes and click the Weld tool in the toolbar. When you export the SVG into Cricut Design Space, it imports as one ready-to-cut outline without needing extra processing.

## Cricut fonts and connected lettering

Cricut fonts are selected in Cricut Design Space. Check the font picker for the styles available to your account, including any purchase or Cricut Access requirement. System fonts are installed on your device; availability depends on the platform. A connected-looking script still needs its outlines checked before a cut.

In CricutCraft, choose from the studio’s own font picker and adjust the lettering at its finished size. CricutCraft does not include Cricut’s proprietary font library. If you bring lettering into a project as SVG artwork, check the source font’s licence for your intended use, then inspect overlaps and small enclosed spaces before welding.

## Weld versus attach

Weld merges geometry: several paths become one, permanently. Attach preserves geometry but pins pieces to a fixed relative position so the mat layout does not rearrange them.

Use weld for script text that must cut as one piece. Use attach for a layered design where the pieces need to stay put relative to each other but still cut separately, a score line on a card, for instance, which must not merge with the card outline.

## Weld is destructive, duplicate first

Once welded, the individual letters are gone; you cannot edit the spelling afterwards. Duplicate the text object and hide the copy before welding, or rely on named version history so the pre-weld state is recoverable past undo depth.

## When weld leaves a hairline

A faint line remaining inside the welded outline means two paths touched but did not overlap. Nudge the letters closer by a hundredth of an inch and weld again, the merge needs genuine intersection, not adjacency.

## Questions

### How to weld in Cricut?

To weld in Cricut Design Space, select the overlapping layers, click the Combine menu at the bottom of the Layers panel, and select Weld. The overlapping elements fuse permanently into one cut line.

### How to weld on Cricut?

Select every shape or letter that should merge into one piece, then click Weld at the bottom of the Layers panel in Design Space. The overlapping outlines merge into a single continuous path.

### Can I undo a weld?

Undo works immediately after welding. Once you close or save the project, a weld is permanent unless you saved a duplicate un-welded copy first.

### Why do my letters still cut apart after welding?

They were touching rather than overlapping. Tighten the letter spacing until the outlines genuinely intersect, then weld again.

### Why is the Weld button greyed out?

Only one layer is selected. Weld needs two or more layers selected, and it will not act on a group that has not been ungrouped, or on a layer that is hidden.
