# Selling SVGs and finished crafts on Etsy

There are two businesses here and they have different rules: selling the digital file, and selling the physical thing you made with it. Most licences permit the second and forbid the first, and getting that backwards is how shops get taken down.

## What a commercial licence usually covers

A standard commercial licence covers physical products you make and sell, shirts, mugs, signs, tumblers. It does not cover redistributing the design file itself, or selling it as part of a bundle, because that competes directly with the licensor.

The paid plan here includes a full commercial licence for physical products. It is per account, and it does not expire for designs you used while subscribed, so a shop built on last year's designs stays legal after a pause.

## Price against the real blank cost

The mistake is pricing against the design and forgetting the blank, the vinyl, the transfer and the twelve minutes of weeding. A $26 shirt with a $6.50 blank is not a $19.50 margin once you account for material and time.

The margin calculator carries the real wholesale cost of each product blank, so you can set a retail price and see the actual per-unit profit before you list, rather than after the first month of sales.

## Personalised orders without the grind

Personalisation is where the margin is and where the time goes. A twenty-name teacher-gift order is twenty manual edits of the same template, and manual edits are where typos come from.

Bulk personalisation takes a CSV of names and a single template and produces one finished design per row in one pass. The names come from the customer's own spreadsheet, so nobody retypes anything and nobody misspells a child's name on twenty mugs.

## What actually sells, and why it is rarely the design

The best-selling categories on Etsy for cutting-machine shops have been stable for years: personalised tumblers and water bottles, name and date signs, teacher and nurse gifts, bachelorette and bridal party sets, car decals, and seasonal shirts in the eight weeks before each holiday. What they share is not artwork, it is a name on them, because a personalised item cannot be price-compared against an identical listing.

The corollary is that generic designs compete on price and personalised ones do not. A quote shirt sits next to four hundred identical quote shirts; the same shirt with a child's name and a date has no competing listing at all, which is where the margin comes from.

Seasonal timing does more for a listing than the design does. Search traffic for a holiday peaks six to eight weeks ahead of it, so a listing published the week before is competing at full price against listings that have had two months to gather reviews.

## Pricing a design, and pricing a made item

Digital files price by what the market bears, typically a few dollars, and the economics are volume: the second sale costs nothing to fulfil. Physical items price from real cost, which is the blank plus the vinyl plus the transfer plus your time, and the time is the part that gets forgotten.

A useful floor for physical work is materials plus an hourly rate for hands-on minutes, then whatever the market supports on top. Twelve minutes of weeding on a $6.50 shirt is not free labour just because it happened at your kitchen table.

The margin calculator carries the real wholesale cost of each blank, so you set a retail price and read the actual per-unit profit before the listing goes live rather than after the first month of sales.

## Mockups that do not misrepresent

Listing photos drive conversion, but a mockup that shows artwork larger than the blank can actually take produces refund requests. Mockups here use each blank's real printable area, so what the listing shows is what the press can deliver.

## Questions

### Can I sell the SVG files themselves?

No. The commercial licence covers physical products you make and sell, not redistribution of the design files. Reselling files is prohibited under essentially every craft-SVG licence, not just this one.

### Do I need to credit the designer?

Not under this licence for physical products. Attribution is appreciated and never required.

### What happens to my licence if I cancel?

Designs downloaded while subscribed stay licensed permanently. New downloads stop.

### What are the best selling Cricut items on Etsy?

Personalised drinkware, name and date signs, teacher and nurse gifts, bridal party sets, car decals and seasonal shirts. The common factor is personalisation, which removes the direct price comparison a generic listing always loses.

### How much should I charge for a Cricut design?

For a digital file, single-digit dollars and volume. For a physical item, materials plus an hourly rate for the hands-on minutes, then market rate on top — weeding time is real cost even when it is your own evening.

### Can I sell designs I made myself?

Yes, files and finished items both, provided every element is yours. Fonts are the usual trap: a font licence frequently permits use in a design and forbids selling the outlines.

### What does SVG mean on an Etsy listing?

That the listing is a digital cut file rather than a physical object. Nothing ships: you download the file, open it in your machine's software and cut it yourself. It is also why those listings have no shipping cost and are non-refundable once downloaded.

### How do I make SVG files to sell?

Draw them yourself in software that exports true SVG, keep every path closed and every layer a separate fill colour, and use only fonts whose licence permits selling the outlines. Selling files you bought under a normal craft licence is prohibited — the licence covers physical products, not redistribution.
