A free alternative to Cricut Design Space
Let us be precise about what an alternative can and cannot be. Design Space is the only software that can send cut instructions to a Cricut — no third-party tool bypasses that, and anything claiming otherwise is selling you something. What it can be replaced for is everything before that: designing, welding, offsetting, laying out the mat and personalising in bulk.

Design Space drives the machine, manages material settings for Cricut's own materials, and its Access library is well curated. If you only ever cut simple single-layer vinyl, it is enough on its own.

What actually replaces Design Space
The design half. You build the file in the browser — text, shapes, uploaded SVGs, library designs — run the boolean operations, lay out the mat, and export an SVG. That SVG goes into Design Space via Upload → Upload Image, and you cut. Design Space becomes a print dialog rather than a design tool.
That handoff sounds like a compromise until you notice it is the same handoff every professional workflow uses. Nobody designs in their printer driver.
Why bother, if you still open Design Space at the end
Because the design step is where the time goes. Offset is behind Cricut Access. Bulk personalisation does not exist — a hundred names is a hundred manual edits. Mat layout is manual, so material waste is whatever you eyeball. There is no version history beyond undo, so a change you regret an hour later is gone.
And because Design Space is a desktop install that will not run on Linux or ChromeOS at all, and demands an update at the least convenient moment. A browser tool opens on whatever machine is in front of you, including a tablet.
The honest limitations
You need Design Space installed to cut. Cricut's own material settings live there, not here. Cricut Access designs stay in Access — this library is a separate 5,000-design catalogue, not a mirror of theirs. And Smart Materials matless cutting is driven entirely by Design Space.
