Design software for the Cricut Maker 3

The Maker 3 cuts more than three hundred materials and takes a rotary blade, a knife blade and a debossing tip. What it does not do is help you design — that part happens before the mat loads, and it is where most of the frustration lives.

You will still need Cricut's own software to cut

Export an SVG from the studio, then in Design Space choose Upload → Upload Image → browse to the file. It arrives with layers and colours intact, ready to place on the mat and cut. Design Space is the only software that can send cut instructions to a Cricut, so this handoff is the last step no third-party tool can remove.

The Cricut Maker 3 workflow, step by step

    Design in the browser

    Open the studio, set the mat to 12″ × 12″ or 12″ × 24″ to match the one you will load, and build the design at final physical size. Working in inches from the start means nothing needs rescaling later.

    Weld and offset

    Weld overlapping script letters into a single outline so the blade does not cut through the joins. Add a contour offset if you want a backing layer or a sticker border.

    Set operations

    Assign cut, score, draw or engrave per layer. These export as named layers, so Design Space maps them to the right tool instead of treating everything as a cut.

    Nest the mat

    Run the mat optimiser to shelf-pack the pieces. On a full sheet of vinyl this routinely recovers 20–30% of material that a naive row layout wastes.

    Export and upload

    Export SVG, then Upload → Upload Image in Design Space, place on the mat and cut.

Why design outside Cricut’s software

Because the design step is where the time goes, and it is the step machine software treats as an afterthought. Boolean operations — weld, slice, contour, offset — are either missing, paywalled or slow in most bundled editors, and none of them lay out a mat for you or personalise a hundred items from a spreadsheet.

Working in the browser also means the tool is wherever you are. There is nothing to install, nothing to update before you can reopen yesterday’s project, and it runs on Linux and ChromeOS where several of these desktop applications simply do not.

  • Real physical dimensions in inches or millimetres — nothing arrives scaled wrong.
  • Closed paths only, so the machine can tell inside from outside.
  • Text converted to outlines, so no font reference can fail on import.
  • One named layer per operation, so tool mapping happens automatically.

Cricut Maker 3 questions

No, and neither can any other third-party tool. Cricut keeps the cut pipeline closed, so Design Space is the only software that can drive the machine. This is the design step: you build the file here and upload the SVG to Design Space to cut.

Yes. Uploading your own SVG and cutting it does not require Cricut Access. Access covers Cricut's own image library, not the upload feature.

Design Space separates layers by fill colour. If two shapes share a fill they arrive grouped. Give each intended layer a distinct fill before exporting and they come in separated.
