Design software for the Brother ScanNCut

ScanNCut cuts from FCM files, and Canvas Workspace converts SVG to FCM for free. That makes the design step fully open — you only need Canvas Workspace for the final conversion.

Brother ScanNCut at a glance

Max cut width
11.7 in (296 mm) on most models
Max cut length
11.7 in on mat
Tools
Auto blade, deep-cut blade, pens, scanning bed
Import formats
FCM native; SVG, DXF and PDF via Canvas Workspace

Exports drop straight into Brother's software

Export an SVG, sign in to Canvas Workspace, use Import → SVG, then download the FCM or send it to the machine over Wi-Fi or by USB stick.

The Brother ScanNCut workflow, step by step

  1. 1

    Design and weld

Build the design in the browser and weld overlapping elements — Canvas Workspace's own weld is clumsier.

  2. 2

    Export SVG

Export a clean SVG with each cut layer a distinct colour.

  3. 3

    Convert in Canvas Workspace

Import → SVG in Canvas Workspace, which converts to FCM at no cost.

  4. 4

    Send to the machine

Transfer over Wi-Fi or by USB stick and cut.

Why design outside Brother’s software

Because the design step is where the time goes, and it is the step machine software treats as an afterthought. Boolean operations — weld, slice, contour, offset — are either missing, paywalled or slow in most bundled editors, and none of them lay out a mat for you or personalise a hundred items from a spreadsheet.

Working in the browser also means the tool is wherever you are. There is nothing to install, nothing to update before you can reopen yesterday’s project, and it runs on Linux and ChromeOS where several of these desktop applications simply do not.

What exports correctly

  • Real physical dimensions in inches or millimetres — nothing arrives scaled wrong.
  • Closed paths only, so the machine can tell inside from outside.
  • Text converted to outlines, so no font reference can fail on import.
  • One named layer per operation, so tool mapping happens automatically.

Formats this exports

  • SVG
  • DXF
  • PDF
  • PNG
