The Explore 3 is a vinyl and iron-on machine first. Most of what goes wrong with it goes wrong at the design stage — unwelded script, a forgotten mirror, a layout that wastes half a sheet.

You will still need Cricut's own software to cut

Export an SVG from the studio, then in Design Space choose Upload → Upload Image → browse to the file. It arrives with layers and colours intact, ready to place on the mat and cut. Design Space is the only software that can send cut instructions to a Cricut, so this handoff is the last step no third-party tool can remove.

The Cricut Explore 3 workflow, step by step

    Set the mat

    Match the studio mat to your physical mat — 12″ × 12″ for standard, 12″ × 24″ for the long one. Everything downstream inherits real inches from this.

    Weld the script

    Cursive fonts overlap. Weld before export or the blade cuts the letters apart at every join.

    Mirror for iron-on

    HTV cuts face-down. Flip horizontally before exporting, and check the preview reads backwards — that is how you know it is right.

    Export and upload

    Export SVG, upload to Design Space, set the material and cut.

Why design outside Cricut’s software

Because the design step is where the time goes, and it is the step machine software treats as an afterthought. Boolean operations — weld, slice, contour, offset — are either missing, paywalled or slow in most bundled editors, and none of them lay out a mat for you or personalise a hundred items from a spreadsheet.

Working in the browser also means the tool is wherever you are. There is nothing to install, nothing to update before you can reopen yesterday’s project, and it runs on Linux and ChromeOS where several of these desktop applications simply do not.

  • Real physical dimensions in inches or millimetres — nothing arrives scaled wrong.
  • Closed paths only, so the machine can tell inside from outside.
  • Text converted to outlines, so no font reference can fail on import.
  • One named layer per operation, so tool mapping happens automatically.
