Design software for the Silhouette Cameo
Silhouette Studio Basic will not open an SVG — that is gated behind the Designer Edition upgrade. It will open a DXF. The studio exports both, so you can work in vectors without paying for the import.

Exports drop straight into Silhouette's software
Export an SVG or DXF, then open it in Silhouette Studio with File → Open. SVG import needs the Designer Edition upgrade; DXF opens in the free Basic edition, which is why the studio exports both.
The Silhouette Cameo 4 & 5 workflow, step by step
- 1
Design in inches
Set the mat to 12″ × 12″ or 12″ × 24″ to match your Cameo mat.
- 2
Export DXF for Basic
If you are on Silhouette Studio Basic, export DXF — it opens directly, with paths intact and no upgrade required.
- 3
Export SVG for Designer Edition
On Designer Edition or above, SVG carries colour and layer information that DXF does not, so prefer it.
- 4
Open and cut
File → Open in Silhouette Studio, then send to the Cameo.
Why design outside Silhouette’s software
Because the design step is where the time goes, and it is the step machine software treats as an afterthought. Boolean operations — weld, slice, contour, offset — are either missing, paywalled or slow in most bundled editors, and none of them lay out a mat for you or personalise a hundred items from a spreadsheet.
Working in the browser also means the tool is wherever you are. There is nothing to install, nothing to update before you can reopen yesterday’s project, and it runs on Linux and ChromeOS where several of these desktop applications simply do not.
What exports correctly
- Real physical dimensions in inches or millimetres — nothing arrives scaled wrong.
- Closed paths only, so the machine can tell inside from outside.
- Text converted to outlines, so no font reference can fail on import.
- One named layer per operation, so tool mapping happens automatically.
Formats this exports
- DXF
- SVG
- PNG
