Print then cut, without the failed registration reads

Print then cut is two operations pretending to be one: a printer lays down artwork with registration marks, then the machine optically finds those marks and cuts a path calculated relative to them. Nearly every failure is either a bleed problem or a mark-reading problem, and they have completely different fixes.

Step by step

    Design inside the safe area

    Keep artwork within the printable area the studio draws on the mat. Registration marks need clear white space around them and artwork that intrudes will break the read.

    Add bleed with an offset

    Apply a small outward offset — 0.02″ to 0.04″ — to the printed layer so colour extends past the cut line. Without it, any cut drift shows as a white sliver.

    Set the cut path

    Add a contour offset of 0.125″ for a classic sticker border, or 0 for a flush die cut. This becomes the cut operation; the artwork stays a print operation.

    Check the DPI

    Confirm effective resolution at final size is at least 300 DPI for crisp print. The studio reports it live against the print zone.

    Export and print

    Export a PDF at true physical size so the printer does not rescale it, then follow your machine software's print-then-cut flow.

    Load the printed sheet, let the sensor find the marks, and cut.

Why the sensor cannot find the marks

Four causes, in order of how often they are the culprit: the paper is too glossy and reflects the sensor; the printed marks are too light because the printer is low on black; artwork or a stray shadow intrudes into the margin around a mark; or the sheet is not flush against the mat guides.

Matte paper solves it more often than anything else. Glossy photo paper is the single most common reason a machine reads two marks and gives up on the third.

Bleed is not the same as offset

Bleed extends the printed colour past where the cut will land, so a cut that drifts by a fraction still lands on ink. Offset moves the cut line itself outward to create a visible border. A sticker usually wants both: a small bleed on the artwork and a larger offset for the white edge.

Size limits

Print-then-cut has a maximum sheet size — 6.75″ × 9.25″ on most Cricut machines, larger on Venture. Design beyond it and the machine silently refuses. The studio warns when the printed area exceeds the limit for the selected machine profile.
