Building on a shape
These are deliberately simple, which makes them the base layer for something more complex: offset one to create a backing in a second colour, slice a piece of text out of it for a knockout effect, or use it as the cut line behind a printed design. A silhouette with a clean closed path is far easier to build on than a detailed illustration.
Getting american flag designs right
A silhouette has no interior detail to fall back on, so the outline carries the entire read. Judge it at the size you will actually cut, not zoomed in. Distressed flags are hundreds of small gaps. They cut best on a fresh blade and a fresh mat. Red, white and blue is three layers of vinyl, and registration is what makes or breaks it. Cut all three from the same origin so they stack without eyeballing, and press the lightest colour first, white under red stops the shirt colour muddying it.
When to make these
Demand climbs from late May and peaks in the ten days before 4 July, then falls off a cliff on the 5th. Memorial Day and Veterans Day pick the same designs up again. If you sell, that is the window the listings need to be live in, search traffic for a seasonal theme arrives weeks before the date, not on it. Simple shapes are what batch well, so this is the set to scale up when a season gets busy and the intricate designs stop being worth the weeding time.
Exporting for your machine
Export SVG for any cutting machine, or DXF for Silhouette Studio Basic and laser software. Because these are single-colour silhouettes the export is one clean path per shape.
