Building on a shape

These are deliberately simple, which makes them the base layer for something more complex: offset one to create a backing in a second colour, slice a piece of text out of it for a knockout effect, or use it as the cut line behind a printed design. A silhouette with a clean closed path is far easier to build on than a detailed illustration.

Getting dad designs right

A silhouette has no interior detail to fall back on, so the outline carries the entire read. Judge it at the size you will actually cut, not zoomed in. These usually go on dark shirts — put a white underlay beneath any mid-tone colour or it sinks into the fabric. A family set is one design at several sizes plus a changing name, which is exactly what a variable-data merge is for. Set the sizes once, feed the names in, and cut the whole set in a single run.

Exporting for your machine

Export SVG for any cutting machine, or DXF for Silhouette Studio Basic and laser software. Because these are single-colour silhouettes the export is one clean path per shape.
