Building on a shape

These are deliberately simple, which makes them the base layer for something more complex: offset one to create a backing in a second colour, slice a piece of text out of it for a knockout effect, or use it as the cut line behind a printed design. A silhouette with a clean closed path is far easier to build on than a detailed illustration.

Getting snowflake designs right

A silhouette has no interior detail to fall back on, so the outline carries the entire read. Judge it at the size you will actually cut, not zoomed in. The lace-style flakes are the hardest cut in a winter set — arms are thin and radial. Stay above 5in. Ornaments are the trap: at 3in, a design that looked fine on screen has strokes below the weeding threshold. Check the thinnest line is at least 0.06in at final size before you cut, or you will spend the evening picking vinyl out with a pin.

When to make these

Searches start in September, run hard through November, and stop dead on 25 December. Build the listings in August. If you sell, that is the window the listings need to be live in — search traffic for a seasonal theme arrives weeks before the date, not on it. Simple shapes are what batch well, so this is the set to scale up when a season gets busy and the intricate designs stop being worth the weeding time.

Export SVG for any cutting machine, or DXF for Silhouette Studio Basic and laser software. Because these are single-colour silhouettes the export is one clean path per shape.
