Building on a shape

These are deliberately simple, which makes them the base layer for something more complex: offset one to create a backing in a second colour, slice a piece of text out of it for a knockout effect, or use it as the cut line behind a printed design. A silhouette with a clean closed path is far easier to build on than a detailed illustration.

Getting celebrations designs right

A silhouette has no interior detail to fall back on, so the outline carries the entire read. Judge it at the size you will actually cut, not zoomed in. Confetti is dozens of tiny separate shapes. Nest them tightly or you waste half a sheet. Cake toppers cut in cardstock need a deep-point blade and a strong-grip mat, and they need the design to have a solid base bar connecting the letters — an unconnected script topper falls apart the moment you lift it off the mat.

Exporting for your machine

Export SVG for any cutting machine, or DXF for Silhouette Studio Basic and laser software. Because these are single-colour silhouettes the export is one clean path per shape.
